After all your preparation for Terra Australis the first day gets riders to the highest point of all the 7 days riding but don’t stress...We are already starting up high at Falls Creek Alpine Village. Setting off from the typically European style village and heading into the ski area, you will climb out towards Mount McKay, the first of many Victorian Alpine Peaks to be visited in the next few days. After the initial climb you’ll return back to the village and cross the Rocky Valley Dam Wall and travel along the edge of the spectacular Rocky Valley Storage before climbing to the highest point of the day Mount Nelse. Skirting below the peak looming to your right, the Alpine Vistas are spectacular and you should take time to enjoy the views before descending down Timms Spur into the Big River Valley, which separates Mount Bogong from the High Plains. You WILL get wet feet here as you encounter the first river crossing in the valley floor. Cool down at the river crossing because it’s a sharp climb out again before crossing the old Bogong Creek race and disused Tramway and descending to Clover Dam. descentA short sharp climb up from the river brings you out to the Bogong High Plains Rd and a stretch on the tarmac before hitting up some sweet single track in the nationally famous Big Hill Mountain Bike Park in Mount Beauty. Grab a feed from the Bakery while you wait for a bus trip back to Falls Creek, catch the evening meal and presentations, then get some zzz’s for tomorrow as you are doing it all over again.
