Volunteer Roles Short Descriptions
Course Marshall
Course Marshalls perform an important operational role in the conduct of the race. They are involved in directing riders on the course and assist in alerting riders to vehicle traffic where appropriate. You may also be required to inform the Race Director of any mishaps that have occurred via mobile phone or radio. Daily working hours will vary depending on your location and availability. Some Course Marshall positions are only required for 1-2 hours and others will be required for 4-5 hours. Your availability will determine which Course Marshall locations you are posted to. Most importantly you are the face of the organisation when riders are on course so a positive attitude, happy smile and encouraging word will go a long way.
Course Preparation and Marking
This role involves placing the course signs out each day before the riders take to the course and removing them after each stage has been completed. You will work with the Course Director out on the course for the best part of the day working 1 day ahead of the race. You may also be required to remove any fallen trees if they are not to big so experience with a chainsaw would be helpful. This could be a demanding role physically so you should be in good shape, enjoy being outdoors and able to work in all weather conditions. The good thing about this role is you will get to experience the amazing environment that the riders will be experiencing as well. It is preferable that you are available for the whole 7 days of the event but if you are not please submit an expression of interest anyway.
Start/Finish Line Construction
This role involves erecting and dismantling the finish and start lines for each days race and moving all the gear to the next location. It may also entail doing odd jobs that may arise during the event but hopefully there won’t be many of those. You will start early each morning to move onto the next finish location and have it set up by the time the first riders come in. Most days you will be finished by late morning to midday and can then have some downtime in the afternoon. The type of work you will be doing is light lifting and so you should be reasonably fit and able to work in all weather conditions. It is preferable that you are available for the whole 7 days of the event but if you are not please submit an expression of interest anyway.
Transport
This role involves driving the vehicles/mini buses/light trucks that will be used to move the equipment and infrastructure, rider’s luggage and deliver riders to their accommodation in each town. You must be over 18 and have a full drivers licence. The hours you are required each day will vary depending on the particular role. If you cannot make it for the whole seven days then this may be a good option for you.
First Aid
If you have First Aid qualifications then you may be able to assist at the First Aid post located at the finish of each stage. A qualified Senior First Aider will supervise you at all times.
Mountain Bikers often involuntarily inspect the course at close range and when they do someone needs to patch them up so they can go and ride another day. You would not be required for all seven days of the event.
Feed Stations
On each stage two feed stations are set up to provide all the riders with drinks, food and encouragement to get them through the days ride. This will involve driving out to the feed station location each morning, setting up and then waiting for the riders to come through. Once the last rider has come through your station you can pack up and return to the finish line to restock for the next day. You will need to do some light lifting to set up the feed station. As with the Course Marshall role you are the face of the organisation when the riders are on course so a positive attitude, happy smile and encouraging word will go a long way. Food handling accreditation would be advantageous.
