“It is not the mountain that we conquer, but ourselves” - Sir Edmund Hillary

Ambassadors

Kerry Ryan began mountain biking late in life, well later then most people do. At age 52 he entered an MTB orienteering event with his son. He came absolutely last and all the course marshalls had gone home by the time he got to the finish. This could have easily been the last time Kerry rode a bike but no, he was hooked. So the usual turn of events then unfolded. I think many of us have been down this path. First was the purchase of a decent MTB, followed by learning the craft of riding in the bush. Incremental improvements to fitness and skill lead to the point where it was time to give racing a go. Some success and the confidence builds inspiring even more training and the inevitable bike and gear upgrades.

Kerry is now 66 years old and over the last 14 years has competed in Cross Country races at the World Championship level. 100km and 24 hour enduros have also been crossed off the to do list. His favourite event though is the “Stage Race” and he is very accomplished in this discipline. He is a veteran campaigner of the Wildside event in Tasmania but his biggest achievement at stage racing would be winning the 50+ age category at the famous and very testing Trans Rockies Challenge in Canada with race partner Craig Peacock.

We invited Kerry Ryan to be an ambassador for Terra Australis for a few reasons. Firstly, he is an ispirational man and we felt his journey in the sport of MTB would inspire people to “have a go”. Secondly were his credentials. Terra Australis has been inspired by events such as Trans Rockies, Trans Alp and Cape Epic. Who better to talk about the experience of an event such as this but someone who has attempted and conquered it?

“As you leave the Hotham Alpine Village and turn off into Lock Car park, a four wheel drive track will take you towards Mount Loch, looking off to your left you will see in the far distance Mount Buffalo lying in the undulations of the Ovens Valley and just off to the right, Wangaratta. In the foreground, the start of the Razorback traversing up towards Mount Feathertop. When you arrive at Loch, the open vista before you is truly alpine, just under Feathertop is the start of the Diamantina spur which cascades down into the valley below, rising out of the valley, on the opposite side, the Niggerheads and the Bogong high plains leading you on to Mount Bogong (the highest mountain in Victoria), to the right of Mount Bogong nestled in the valley below is the alpine village of Falls Creek where we started from the previous day. Descending Mount Loch you will ride through some of the most glorious alpine terrain, passing by the old Red Robin gold mine, at the end of the descent we pass by the “battery” (where the gold is separated from the rock) and continue to ride through an untouched lush valley running between Feathertop and the Niggerheads. This event will be up there with the best.”

Kerry Ryan has put together some insiders tips for the Terra Australis, survival advice drawn from his first hand experience in the Trans Rockies Challenge - click here to download the insiders tips (pdf file)
